My Father, Benjamin Jerome Scott, Jr. graduated from South Carolina State University with a BS in Education, Elementary Education June of 1977. He began teaching at James J. Davis Elementary School from August 1977 to May 1989 teaching the 4th and 6th grade. He loved and called James J. Davis home for the majority of his teaching career, except for his last year as a teacher. In August of 1989, Beaufort County moved the 6th grade out of elementary schools to middle schools. He taught his last year as a teacher at Robert Smalls Middle School. My Father graduated in May of 1983 from the University of South Carolina- Beaufort with a Master of Education Degree in Early Childhood Education. He continued his education earning an Education Specialist Degree in Education Administration and Certification as an Elementary School Principal. He started his career as a principal apprentice at Hilton Head Elementary School in May of 1990. He retired in May 2001.
I decided to continue his love of education by starting a non-profit in his name to give scholarships to high school graduates that will be 1st generation college graduates. The concentration will be for those students that attended James J. Davis Elementary School, renamed in 2012 to the James J. Davis Early Childhood Center, a subsidiary of Whale Branch Elementary School.
